World Ocean Day
Accra, Ghana — June 27, 2025— The Accra City Omanye Aba Hall came alive with a vibrant World Ocean Day celebration. In addition to the main symposium and panel discussions, the event featured a captivating live art competition inspired by this year’s theme, “Wonder: Sustaining What Sustains Us.”
Four premier schools: St. Mary’s, La Presec, HOTCASS, and Nungua SHS competed in a one-and-a-half hour live painting challenge, each team translating their vision of ocean sustainability and protection into vibrant canvases. Each group had five minutes to present and explain their artwork, articulating their ideas about ocean conservation.
The event was graced by the new Chief Executive Officer of the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA), Prof Nana Ama Browne Klutse visited every art stand and personally engaged with the young artists. The audience, filled with educators, students, and environmental advocates, witnessed a dynamic showcase of creativity and commitment to ocean sustainability and protection in Ghana.
Following the competition, the artworks were displayed in the auditorium. The lead judge, Nana Otuo Owoahene, outlined the judging criteria; skill, creativity, originality, and presentation. After deliberation, La Presec was announced as the overall winner, earning both cash prizes and plaques, with all participating schools receiving awards in recognition of their effort.
Nana Otuo Owoahene, as lead judge, expressed excitement about the students’ creativity and proposed that the next year’s event should include sensitization workshops and broaden participation to basic, senior high, and tertiary institutions. All displayed works can be added to the EPA’s art collection, paving the way for ongoing exhibitions and engagement during future World Ocean Day celebrations.
